The goal of this line, available exclusively at NuBe Green, is to continually discover new sources of local materials and to celebrate local skills while evolving in a way that is conceptual, appealing, and sustainable.

Giving cashmere without taking away from the environment

If we were to sum up our reasoning for creating NuBe Green in one real-world example, it could easily be the story of the mass-production of cheap cashmere goods, consumed like candy in the US around the holidays. Over-consumption of foreign goods is punishing the environment and workers' livelihoods around the planet. From the Chicago Tribune:

- In less than a decade, a deluge of cheap cashmere from China has transformed a centuries-old industry, stripping the plush fabric of its pricey pedigree and making it available in big-box America.

– The country's enormous herds of cashmere-producing goats have slashed the price of sweaters. But they also have helped graze Chinese grasslands down to a moonscape, unleashing some of the worst dust storms on record. This in turn fuels a plume of pollution heavy enough to reach the skies over North America.

- This stretch of China's mythic grasslands, one of the world's largest prairies, is running out of grass. The land is so barren that herders buy cut grass and corn by the truckload to keep their animals alive. Goats are so weak that some herders carry the stragglers home by motorcycle. The goats are expected to live 10 years, half the life span of their parents.

Our solution, as always, is to source goods locally from US-growers and manufacturers, and to re-purpose materials as much as possible. Dealing directly with artisans and craftspeople may mean a higher price tag, but it ensures standards that we expect for ourselves: fair pay and livelihood.

For cashmere, that means recycling fabrics and fibers from post-consumer cashmere goods. Re-use the yarn, or refashion the garment. This holiday, find up-cycled cashmere gifts for grandkids, sig others, or yourself at NuBe Green and feel confident about supporting local artisans and earth-friendly goods!

Not only are we in Seattle, a city focused on sustainable energy production, city-wide composting, bicycling and public transit, but we are in the most walkable section of the most walkable neighborhood. How do we know this?

We checked our Walk Score. We ranked 98 out of 100!

Come in to the shop and we'll give you suggestions on our favorite walkable bookstore, bar, pizza joint, record shop, florist... When the rain starts, we may be less excited about walking to and fro. NuBe knows organic cotton. We know that our organic cotton Rebel Green lunch totes are perfect for the rebellious PBJ eaters in our lives. We know that our Native Organic Cotton bath towel sets keep us cozy after an herbal bath. And we know that, compared to methods of growing that don't follow strict environmental standards, organic cotton must be better for the environment.

But today we found out some specifics! From the Organic Trade Association:

Organic cotton is grown using methods and materials that have a low impact on the environment. Organic production systems replenish and maintain soil fertility, reduce the use of toxic and persistent pesticides and fertilizers, and build biologically diverse agriculture.

Growlers are 64 ounces, which is the same as 4 full 16-oz pints, or just over 5 12-oz bottles, and only cost about $7-$10 to fill. For each growler you fill, you are avoiding the production and disposal of nearly a full six-pack of cans or bottles. According to the National Resources Defense Council, that saves enough energy to run a 50-watt light bulb for 42 hours. Add the carbon saved from shipping and distribution, and multiply by X number of thirsty friends, and your apres-work drink decision can really make a difference!

Cardboard never looked so good...

NuBe Green is hosting an open house in the model unit at The Broadway Building staged with cardboard furnishings carried in the store, including light fixtures and a custom headboard by Seattle's graypants. The model apartment has a fabulous view overlooking Cal Anderson Park. And we swear the cardboard furniture is sturdy...

The open house is on Thursday, June 3rd between 4 and 8pm. The Broadway is a Built Green 3-star certified property located at 1620 Broadway.

NuBe was a proud sponsor of CRAVEgreen, which took place at Seattle's Herban Feast on Tuesday the 11th. As CRAVE puts it: This glamorously green party proves that you don't have to sacrifice style to be sustainable. We love that this was an event with heart -- all of the raffle proceeds went to support the Women's Funding Alliance.

We set up shop, chatted with attendees and had fun watching the models strut their sustainable stuff down the runway in some of our fun and flirty outfits. If any of you ladies out there are CRAVE-ing something cute to wear this summer, check out the goods online or in-store.

Join us Saturday March 20th for a community crawl to raise awareness about Census Participation! Learn about the importance of the Census for the LGBT community while you join your neighbors for a special night out of food, drink, music, and fun around Cal Anderson Park. The festivities will begin at 5:00.

Look for Street Teams near Cal Anderson Park for handouts, goodies, and special deals at participating businesses. Toast for the count! We're offering 20% off glassware to customers between 5:00 and 7:00 in order to help raise awareness.

For the first time, the LGBT community and same-sex couples have an opportunity to be counted in the Census. Census statistics guide many vital government decisions. Federal and state governments use census numbers to form congressional district boundaries and to distribute billions of dollars for social services. Non-profit organizations use census statistics to plan services for individuals and their families, influencing the locations for schools, roads, and hospitals.

According to the Research Director at the UCLA School of Law, "Census data have done more to make LGBT families and their needs visible than any other source of data we have."

One of our favorite things about NuBe is the customers. This morning we were blessed with some adorable ladies who let us take photos for the web store of them trying on pieces from our clothing line. [For the record, the woman writing this blog is the short brunette, & I'm not referring to myself in those terms!]

Every piece we carry is made with U.S.-grown cotton and/or up-cycled materials, and many items in our clothing line are one-of-a-kind. The clothing line covers all bases from sleek organic cotton dresses to impossibly sexy black jeans to unique statement pieces. As we get the web-store up & running, we're taking photos most days. Some Favorite Sustainability Tips

Here at NuBe we aim to play a role in protecting the environment and supporting our local community. Here are a few sustainability tips we've picked up from customers, artists, and local people involved in the "green" movement. How do you lessen your carbon footprint each day?

Keep your car tuned and the tires properly inflated. Fixing a serious maintenance problem, such as a faulty oxygen sensor, can improve mileage by as much as 40%. Yeah, we're surprised and impressed by that too! Here's to saving money on gas and lessening our carbon footprint simultaneously.

Install a low flow shower head and faucet aerators. Showerheads that use 2.5 gpm and faucets that use 1.5 gpm use half the water traditional fixtures use. It only takes minutes to install, costs less than $20, and saves 100 gallons a week per person. Sweet & simple, right?

Buying local products and food cuts down on energy wasted from transport. Added bonus? You support local farmers, and the food often has more nutritional value, since vitamins are lost as fruits and vegetables age.

Invest in a bike. You'll save money on gas over time, and you're getting the added bonus of fresh air and good exercise. This is one of our favorite ways to cut back on energy and gas consumption.

Make your own compost. See this site for all sorts of information about the benefits and how to get started.
